The route

The road
past the dam.

From Geneva Airport, Tignes is roughly 170 kilometres and two and a half to two and three-quarter hours away. The journey follows the Tarentaise to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, the last low point in the valley, then begins the Haute-Tarentaise climb.

That climb has a feature regulars know well: it runs alongside and then across the Chevril dam, whose reservoir swallowed the old village of Tignes in the 1950s. The road clings to the hillside, passes through several tunnels and avalanche galleries, then rises again towards Tignes-le-Lac and Val Claret.

It is a fine road. It is also one of the most exposed in the Northern Alps: after significant snowfall it is regularly managed, sometimes closed for a few hours, for clearing and controlled avalanche release. There is nothing exceptional about that — it is a normal fact of winter in the Haute-Tarentaise.

What changes then is knowing. Our vehicles and drivers are based in Moûtiers from December to April: we follow the prefectoral orders in real time and tell you before you are left standing in an airport hall with your cases.

Two practical notes. On journey time, allow more on a Saturday in the school holidays or when the climb is being managed. On luggage, tell us the number of ski and snowboard bags when booking — that decides the vehicle far more than the passenger count does.

Tignes has another characteristic that explains part of our work outside winter: the resort also lives in summer. The Grande Motte glacier opens in June for summer skiing, national teams run training camps here, and the lake draws a family clientele. Our transfers to Tignes do not stop in April.

On the ground, the resort is built around the lake and runs largely on internal shuttles. What we are asked for is different: dinner in Val d'Isère, a run to the heliport, a descent to Bourg-Saint-Maurice for an evening train, or a day trip into Italy over the Petit-Saint-Bernard pass when it is open — which it is not in winter, the pass being closed by snow from November to May.

One last piece of advice for this destination. If your stay begins or ends on a day forecast for heavy snow, tell us in advance rather than on the morning. We can then shift by an hour or two, leave before an announced closure, or arrange a pick-up at Bourg-Saint-Maurice instead. What is expensive in the Haute-Tarentaise is never the snow: it is finding out about it too late.

A word on the return leg, which needs more anticipation than the arrival. From Tignes you come back down past the dam to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, cross the Tarentaise and then reach the motorway — three sections, only one predictable. On a Saturday morning the traffic coming down meets the traffic going up on a two-lane road, and the valley floor between Moûtiers and Albertville becomes the choke point of the Northern Alps. We set departure time from your flight, your part of the resort, the day and the real state of the roads that morning, with a margin we are happy to defend.

Do also allow for returning hire equipment and handing back keys. Tell us what has to happen before you leave and we build it into the schedule rather than discovering it on the doorstep.

Finally, on groups: training camps, clubs and extended families are common in Tignes, and they rarely arrive on a single flight. We synchronise several pick-ups so everyone reaches the resort together, with one lead driver and one point of contact. For agencies and chalet operators we set up centralised invoicing and dedicated seasonal terms.

Your exact address

Tignes, from 1,550
to 2,100 metres.

Five settlements staggered up the climb, at very different altitudes and distances. The resort name alone is not enough.

Val Claret — 2,100 m

The highest point and the closest to the Grande Motte glacier. Ski-in ski-out, much in demand at the start and end of the season. The last kilometre from Le Lac is short but wind-exposed.

Tignes-le-Lac — 2,100 m

The heart of the resort, around the lake. Most of the hotels, apartments and chalets are here, with access sometimes restricted in high season.

Le Lavachet

An extension of Tignes-le-Lac, quieter and slightly lower. Often chosen for weekly rentals.

Les Boisses & Les Brévières

Tignes 1800 and the lower village at the foot of the dam. The easiest to reach in heavy snow, and the first served on the way up.

A road closed for three hours is not an incident: it is winter in the Haute-Tarentaise. What makes the difference is learning about it before you reach the airport.

Geneva ↔ Tignes
Night flights & long-haul

Land at dawn,
ski by mid-morning.

A growing share of our passengers to the Haute-Tarentaise arrive on long-haul flights landing at Geneva between 5 and 7 a.m. — notably from the Gulf states, where connections leave little choice over timing.

Paradoxically that is the best moment to drive up to Tignes. The Tarentaise is empty, the climb past the dam is quiet, and you reach the resort before the lifts open. A client who left Doha or Riyadh the previous evening can ski the same day.

It does, however, require being there. A driver setting out from Chambéry or Annecy at 3 a.m. for a 6 a.m. meet, with mountain roads to cross, does not offer the same reliability as a team based in the Tarentaise. Our vehicles sleep in Moûtiers: positioning for a night flight is an organisational decision, not a gamble.

Two things we do as a matter of course on these arrivals. The cabin is pre-warmed — stepping off an aircraft at 24 degrees into a freezing vehicle after fifteen hours in the air is nobody's idea of luxury. And we drive smoothly: after a sleepless night and with 1,700 metres of climbing ahead, half the passengers are asleep before Albertville.

If you are travelling with significant jet lag or with young children, say so. We adapt the pace, the stops and the temperature rather than applying a standard protocol.

The right vehicle

Two and three-quarter hours:
comfort counts.

On the long Haute-Tarentaise routes the choice of vehicle weighs as much as the choice of timing.

Mercedes-Benz V-Class

The majority choice: six passengers, ski and snowboard bags, a week's luggage. Ride height and driving position that inspire confidence on the dam climb.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Two passengers, equipment hired locally. After a night flight, nearly three hours of quiet and reclining seats changes the arrival entirely.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Understated and quick, for one or two passengers travelling light outside peak weeks.

Groups & training camps

Teams, training camps and group stays are common in Tignes. We run convoys leaving and arriving together, with a lead driver and one point of contact.

Frequently asked — Geneva to Tignes

What people ask
most often.

How long does the Geneva to Tignes transfer take?
Around two and a half to two and three-quarter hours in normal conditions, for roughly 170 kilometres. Allow more on a Saturday in the school holidays or when the climb from Bourg-Saint-Maurice is being managed.
Can the road to Tignes be closed?
Yes, and it is normal in the Haute-Tarentaise. After significant snowfall the climb is regularly managed or closed for a few hours, for clearing and controlled avalanche release. We follow the orders in real time and warn you in advance.
Do you serve Val Claret as well as Les Brévières?
All five settlements: Val Claret, Tignes-le-Lac, Le Lavachet, Les Boisses (Tignes 1800) and Les Brévières. They are staggered over more than five hundred metres of altitude — give us the exact address.
Do you cover journeys to Val d'Isère?
Yes, all winter. The two Espace Killy resorts are neighbours by road and we run between them regularly: dinners, heliport transfers, descents to Bourg-Saint-Maurice for a train. The Val d'Isère route →
Are your vehicles equipped for snow?
Approved winter tyres on all four wheels from 1 November to 31 March under the French Loi Montagne applicable in Savoie, with chains on board. Access to Tignes is very regularly subject to mandatory equipment rules.
Do you drive to Tignes in November and May?
Yes. The Grande Motte glacier extends the Tignes season well beyond other resorts. These are in fact the pleasantest periods: quiet roads, an easy climb and a journey that holds comfortably within the estimate.
Do I need a passport?
The journey crosses the Franco-Swiss border: a valid identity card or passport for every passenger, children included, and the relevant visa for non-Schengen nationals.
How is the fare set?
On your actual journey, the vehicle and the timing, confirmed before you commit. No meter, no surprise supplement. Visa, American Express, Apple Pay, bank transfer or cash.
